OUR MISSION + VISION
Birth Sanctuary Gainesville is dedicated to improving the lives, health, and maternal-fetal outcomes of those giving birth in Alabama.
In 2018 Alabama ranked third in the United States for infant and maternal mortality.
In 2019, 8 out of every 1000 babies born in Alabama died before reaching one year of age.
Out of these shocking statistics, a distressing trend emerges: Black birthing mothers and their babies are TWICE as likely to experience maternal-infant mortality as their counterparts across race and class lines.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
5 Key Pillars of Success for
Safe + Supported Births
-
ACCESS
Western Alabama has become a hospital desert for maternal healthcare, often requiring 2+ hour round trip transit for all monthly and weekly checkups. People giving birth in rural areas are experiencing acute disparities in healthcare due to simple geographical logistics. We aim to provide easily accessible care in the heart of communities that need it most.
-
CARE
Birth is a natural process that occurs most smoothly when mothers feel comfortable and supported. Accordingly, our care model is comprehensive, centering on pregnancy, well-woman and routine gynecologic care, family planning, prenatal care, labor, birth, postpartum, and early postpartum care.
-
COMMUNITY
With childbirth education classes, breast and chestfeeding support, healing through the arts initiatives, parent-and-child groups (from prenatal yoga to community-sourced childcare), and more, we serve as a hub for families to grow stronger together.
-
EQUITY
The path to equity begins at birth. Our commitment to providing compassionate, comprehensive, easily accessible care for underserved populations improves not only adverse perinatal outcomes and high infant mortality rates, but also benefits the community as a whole.
-
KNOWLEDGE
By providing midwifery education, training, and apprenticeships, and childhood educator support, we are working to expand and increase access to life-changing and life-saving knowledge across Alabama—as well as serving as a center for workforce development and job creation.
